MBALE REGIONAL REFERRAL HOSPITAL

MRRH, the government referral hospital for the region, is a large site offering inpatient and outpatient services for many different medical specialities. ATLAS volunteers can spend time with various departments depending on their professional interests, including pediatrics, internal medicine, emergency medicine, obstetrics & gynecology, nursing and physical therapy. We work with MRRH to facilitate a rotation experience suited to the volunteer's educational needs.

MBALE CLINICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE

MCRI’s mission is to provide high quality, evidence-based clinical research and training for sustainable development. Their vision is to be a center of excellence in research, training and innovations. ATLAS volunteers have the opportunity to work with MCRI staff and get involved with ongoing projects.

Busitema University

Mbale is home to a branch of Busitema University, a centre of academic and professional excellence in science, technology and innovation. Busitema aims to provide high standard training while engaging in quality research and outreach for socio-economic transformation and sustainable development. ATLAS volunteers will work closely with Busitema University trainees completing coursework and clinical rotations at MRRH.

JOY HOSPICE + BUWASUNGUYI HEALTH CENTER

Operated by the inspirational Dr. Jan White, a UK-trained physician, Joy Hospice offers palliative care, maternity, inpatient, and acute care services to adults and children in the Mbale District. Buwasunguwi Health Center is a health center also operated by Dr. Jan, offering outpatient, inpatient and maternity services to the people of rural Manafwa District.

ATLAS volunteers will work with Dr. Jan to see both inpatient and outpatient cases at each of her sites and will have the opportunity to see her unique solutions to healthcare challenges in Uganda.

CURE CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL OF UGANDA

This pediatric neurosurgical hospital is one of a kind in eastern Africa, specializing in spina bifida, hydrocephalus, and other intracranial pathologies.  Every volunteer will visit CURE at least once, and they welcome ATLAS volunteers to spend more time with them if they’re interested in neurosurgery or PICU care.

PATHWAYS DEVELOPMENT INITIATIVE

PDI is a local Ugandan community-based organization that provides educational and development support to villages in the Bududa District.  Operated by ATLAS's host family, the Zaale's, PDI operates a village school, operates Village Savings and Loan Associations, and provides educational support to area children. ATLAS helps support PDI’s activities and often partners for health outreach initiatives.

CASA UGANDA FOUNDATION

Founded by longtime ATLAS partner Naminya Saleh, the Casa Uganda Foundation aims to prevent school dropouts and limit educational challenges faced by schoolgirls because of lack of sanitary pads. Activities include school outreach, sexual health education, and workshops for the making of reusable menstrual pads (RUMPs). ATLAS volunteers can help organize and lead educational sessions and provide needed supplies.
