Most of ATLAS's current activities are in the Bududa, Manafwa and Mbale regions of eastern Uganda. This rural, hard to access region of the country is extremely under-served in terms of healthcare provision, education, and development initiatives.
The districts where we work are at relatively high elevation in a beautiful and remote, mountainous region of eastern Uganda. Bududa and Manafwa are within Mt. Elgon National Park. Mable, the biggest town in our region, is approximately 6 hours from the capital, Kampala, and 7-8 hours from Entebbe, home to Uganda's international airport. From Mbale, it takes another 1-2 hours (by car, motorcycle and on foot) to reach our main clinical partners.
This part of Uganda is well known for its delicious Arabica coffee, its rugged terrain, its propensity for landslides during severe rainy seasons, and its warm and welcoming inhabitants, the Bagisu.
